It is the surgical removal of the lobe where the structure determined to be cancer is located. It is known that around 80% of breast cancers recur in the same lobe. Surgical removal of the entire lobe prevents 80% of the risk of recurrence in breast-conserving surgery.
Due to such modern surgical techniques, while in previous years the removal of the entire breast (Mastectomy) was preferred in breast cancer surgery, today breast-conserving surgeries are more preferred.
Performing a Frozen Biopsy during lobectomy is important during surgery to determine whether the surgical margins are clean. When the surgical margins are clear as a result of rapid pathology performed with frozen, other procedures on the breast can be safely carried out. Thanks to today's modern surgical techniques, advanced chemotherapy, radiotherapy and smart drug applications, breast-conserving surgeries have taken precedence over mastectomy.
Wide harvesting, such as lobectomy, was found to be the same as in patients treated with radiotherapy, as it eliminated 85% of the risk of future recurrence of breast cancer. It is preferred by patients because it does not pose a risk and has better cosmetic results.
